Iain White's Top 3 Web Development Books

It is a common question during interviews for Web Developers to ask what there favourite work related books are.

These are the 3 books that I always have on (or at least near) my desk.

The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master

by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas

The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master

When I first read this book many years ago I got through the first chapter and thought "They know me... they get what I'm about... this is how I work!"

Since then I have been hooked, this is one of my must have books. I have re-read it many times. I often quote from it during meetings and in documents that I right.

I strongly and emphatically implore you to buy this book. If you read it, incorporate its ideas into your work, and return to it frequently, you will become a better programmer.

The Art of War

By Sun Tzu, Translated by Thomas Cleary

The Art of War

I know it is an old cliche but business is war.

I'm not into office politics and I do not treat my Development Team like an army, but there is ancient wisdom in this text that can be applied to the every day confrontations that arrive during Web Development.

Make it So: Leadership for the Next Generation (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

By Wess Roberts

Make it So: Leadership for the Next Generation (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

I'm a big Star Trek fan, which is why I first read this book. Each chapter consists of a short Star Trek: TNG story than explains the decisions and leadership skills displayed by Captain Picard and other Starfleet officers.
